Climate Zone:
- The climate zone of our Polis, which is located on the eastern side of the Attica region—near Marathon, has a climate that is very hot, arid, and rocky. This region is on the driest part of Greece, with summers being extremely hot, and there being little rain, leaves the soil to be thin, and not very good for farming. Also, the terrain of this region is rocky and rugged, which also makes the soil not very good for farming. This climate and terrain affects our Polis’ economy, by this polis will not be able to support itself or thrive off of any agricultural production because there will be little agricultural production occurring. This means the inorder for our economy to do well, it will have to be based off of 50% agricultural production and 50% trading.
Staple Crop Produced:
- Due to the poorer climate zone our Polis is located in, there will not be an abundance of crops able to be produced for the city-state. However, three main crops will provide as a “staple crop” for the Polis. These staple crops produced are olives, figs, and grapes, which are able to thrive in this location despite the climate zone. These olives will be able to produce olive oil that was good for trading with.
Additional Natural Resources:
- Other natural resources: marble, silver, lead, and clay for pottery come from mountains and hills.
- The center of Attica held quarries that yielded the high-quality marble used in building the Parthenon and other public buildings.
- In the rocky region of Laurium was the Athenian silver mines which provided a valuable resource.
